A group of federal judges charged with determining sentencing guidelines for federal crimes has decided to reduce the severity of punishments associated with nonviolent controlled substance violations in Florida and the rest of the nation. The justices are vying for the release of approximately 46,000 federal prisoners -- many of whom are serving multi-decade-long sentences for nonviolent federal drug crime convictions. Congress must now approve the reform, which was passed by the panel on a recent Friday.
A firefighter from Pinellas Park has resigned, following accusations that he was selling prescription drugs. The 38-year-old Florida man turned his resignation letter into his employer on a recent Wednesday. At this time, he faces 16 counts of drug trafficking and/or drug possession.
Police in Cape Coral took a Florida man and woman into custody on charges of heroin trafficking. In addition to drug possession and trafficking offenses, the man was also charged with illegal firearm possession. The arrest was made on a recent Saturday evening during a routine traffic stop for an alleged seatbelt violation in Cape Coral.
Two Florida residents from Punta Gorda were arrested on drug charges on a recent Monday in Charlotte County after a routine traffic stop. According to sheriff’s deputies, they discovered a large amount of marijuana in the vehicle of the suspects’ car. They have been charged with drug possession with intent to distribute.
