Florida man to fight drug possession charges

A Florida man was recently arrested and is now facing multiple drug-related charges, police said. Police accused the man of drug possession after they claimed that officers smelled pot that was emanating from the St. Petersburg man's car. Upon searching the vehicle, they claim they discovered 84 bags of gummy candy that were all purportedly laced with THC.

The police pulled over the 23-year-old man around 11:15 p.m. in St. Petersburg. During the search, officers say they discovered almost 23 grams of hash oil and over 2,300 grams of pot. In addition, he allegedly possessed the 84 bags of the drug-laced gummy candy.

According to the detectives, the bags of drug-laced gummies all had labels stating the percentage of THC, as well as the drug's brand name, Zelda. In addition to the drugs, police claim the man also had empty plastic bags and a couple of scales that are sometimes used to weigh and then distribute different types of narcotics. The man was arrested, charged with several different forms of drug possession and booked into Pinella County Jail.

The accused individual will be entitled by law to a criminal defense, including representation by a lawyer during the pending Florida legal proceedings. Drug possession charges, especially those involving an intent to sell, typically come with potentially severe penalties should a conviction ultimately be secured. Nevertheless, the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution contains important safeguards against unreasonable searches and seizures, which may prove to be a focal point for the accused's defense counsel as they prepare a defense for the current accusations.
